hopeschild asked: Hi Morley I really appreciated your magnesium conversation with Sean at UW. I suddenly saw the light on so many dietary issues. You mentioned some good sources of magnesium including Buckwheat and and Millet. Nora Gedgaudas (primal Body-Primal mind) seemed to discourage the intake of carbs/starches including buckwheat flower. Do you differ on that point? Is the issue of flower different from the issue of grains? Are you talking about soaked grains? Do you refer to cooked organ meats or raw?

Thanks for taking the time to listen to the show and for posing this excellent question.

What I am more dedicated to is making sure that folks supplement their diet with a bio-available form of Mg. I am committed to an Ancestral Diet, but am not rigid about the components. Yes, technically the anthropologists will argue that grains are “new” on the scene, but indigenous tribes have been eating them for thousands of years with little or no issue.

The reason for buckwheat & millet is that they have substantial higher levels of Mg than the overused grains today. And yes, soaking is an important step to take to limit the presence of phytates.

As for the organ meats, I insist on grass-fed and tend to favor cooked organ meats. A word of caution, now that Monsanto has the go-ahead for GMO alfalfa, you won’t know what the composition of the “grass” is that these critters are eating. It’s an abomination (as opposed to Obama-nation), but we must be vigilant in knowing what we are eating.

Hope that helps…

Cheers!
